Community-based Rangeland Management in Sakteng, Trashigang to promote sustainable rangeland management as a deliberate means to protect and conserve high altitude environment and secure livelihoods of nomads on a sustainable basis.
Project Objective and Intended Results: The primary objective of the project is to promote sustainable rangeland management as a deliberate means to protect and conserve high altitude environment and secure rural livelihoods of nomads on a more sustainable basis. Other specific objectives are: 1. Rehabilitate landslide areas through proper water management, water source protection, fencing of critical areas; construction of check dams and other bioengineering works in landslide areas; 2. Overcome winter fodder storage by promoting willow tree as a source of winter fodder and live fencing and fodder conservation technologies like silage making; 3. Sustainable rangeland management practices like the concept of rotational grazing and paddock system and other environment friendly animal husbandry practices and management regime introduced; 4. Reduce overgrazing of the area through promotion of improved cattle breed and disposal of unproductive cattle; 5. Initiate community-based repair, maintenance and renovation of degraded rangeland; 6. Reduce use of resinous-wood/kerosene/diesel fuel for lighting purposes by providing renewable energy technology like portable solar lamps; 7. Reduce fuel wood consumption by supplying portable improved cooking stoves; 8. Promote group savings for ensuring continuity and sustainability and efficient management of various activities initiated under SGP
Intended Results: The proposed project objectives/activities will directly or indirectly contribute to GEF related to protection of biodiversity, mitigation of adverse effects due to climate change, and prevent land degradaton. By promoting rangeland management, reduction of unproductive cattle, proper water source protection and management, improved cooking stove, solar lighting and planting of fodder trees, it is expected to minimize further degradation of rangeland. It also means the furture of this ancient culture of the nomads in the 21st century.
