Bhutan Recovery and Reconstruction ProjectIn 2009, Bhutan was struck by two disasters deemed to be the most catastrophic that the country has experienced in recent times. On May 25 and 26 2009, incessant rainfall, attributed to the effects of cyclone Aila, caused widespread damage to public and community infrastructure, agriculture, habitations, government buildings and hydro projects in the range of 17 million USD. On September 21, 2009 an earthquake of magnitude of 6,1 on the Richter scale struck Eastern Bhutan. 12 people have been reported dead and it is estimated that damages worth of 50.8 million USD have affected households including public services. The high cost of reconstruction after the two natural disasters would likely divert resources from development projects approved under the 10th Five-Year Plan, which already had a US$ 400,000 unfunded component at the time of adoption. In partnership with the RGoB, UNDP is implementing a project that includes the following outputs:
