UN Bhutan staff participates in a Stand up Take Action eventAs part of the global campaign “Stand Up Take Action to end Poverty” and to achieve the MDGs, a total of 13,456 people from all over Bhutan participated in the campaign. The record number of participation in the global event has set a new world record for largest mobilization in history. More than 173 million people around the world stood up and took action to end poverty. In Asia, more than 100 million people participated. Staff of the UN System in Bhutan participated in a Stand Up and Take Action to end Poverty event held in the UN House premises in Thimphu. The event took place simultaneously across several schools in Bhutan, coinciding with the joint commemoration of the World Food Day and the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. The event provided an opportunity for the participants to remind themselves and world leaders to make the MDGs an urgent priority and to deliver on the promises we made to end poverty, and to usher in a new era of equality, health and prosperity. At Tendu Middle Secondary School, Samtse Dzongkhag, about 2150 persons comprising students, teachers, representatives from government, international organizations and general public participated in the Stand Up campaign. In addition, about 7600 persons comprising students and teachers from 7 schools under Samtse Dzongkhag also undertook the Stand Up campaign and made a pledge against poverty. Furthermore, 1899 students and teachers from Gelephu LSS (Sarpang), 464 from Jigmeling LSS (Sarpang), 802 from Mongar LSS (Mongar) and 475 from Ura MSS (Bumthang) participated in the Stand Up during their morning school assemblies. The events included speeches and talks by students on poverty and its effects on development. |
