Community Micro-Hydro for Sustainable Livelihood
Background
Power development in Bhutan has so far focused on the development of the capital-intensive large hydro-power plants, and the associated expansion of a central grid and regional grids, facilitated through a centralized state and Dzongkhag structure.
In order for Bhutan to accomplish the ambitious national and regional targets set in their 9th National Development Plan and the 2020 goal of 100% electrification coverage, it will however be necessary to promote increasingly innovative and decentralized energy service modalities that are cost effective and highly participatory in their development operation and maintenance
Objectives
The Project’s objective is improve on the socio-economic development of Sengore community through generation of renewable energy and its utilization for community based rural enterprises leading to enhanced livelihoods and poverty alleviation.
Achievements & expected results
- All households in Sengore have access to electricity with the inaugural of the 100 Kw Micro hydro.
- Construction of community Centre completed
Consultants recruited to look at the CCF, Income Generation activities, Capacity Development, Community MH energy policy framework and financial mechanism.
