Earthquake Risk Reduction and Recovery Preparedness for Bhutan

Background
As part of the Regional Programme on Earthquake Risk Reduction & Recovery Programme, this project is designed to strengthen the institutional and community level capacity to plan and implement earthquake risk reduction strategies and disaster recovery preparedness in Bhutan. It also seeks to establish Regional cooperation through knowledge sharing and development of practices in the context of the SAARC Comprehensive Framework on Disaster Management agreed in February 2006.

Objectives
The objective of the project is to strengthen the institutional and communal capacity to plan and implement disaster risk reduction strategies through integrated disaster preparedness and recovery approach for high risk areas in Bhutan following regional approach.

Achievements & expected results

Output 1:     Standards, Codes and Guidelines for Seismic Evaluation and retrofitting of buildings reviewed/adopted

Output 2: Earthquake Risk identified and Vulnerability Assessment conducted

Output 3:   Institutional capacity building for earthquake preparedness and mitigation conducted

Output 4:   Model projects to support mitigation measures for seismic risk reduction Implemented:

Output 5:   Awareness on disaster risk preparedness and recovery at all levels conducted.

Output 6:   Capacities at the national, district and community levels reviewed / assessed and built.

Output 7:     Sharing and exchange of national and regional information, lessons and best practice for Policy Feedback and advocacy facilitated.
