The GEF Small Grants Programme

Balancing development with conservation

The Small Grants programme is a joint initiative funded by the Global Environmental Facility and implemented by the UNDP. The SGP is designed to support local community actions that address global environmental concerns such as biodiversity loss, adverse climate change, pollution of international waters and land degradation or desertification.  It works on the belief that small amounts of direct funding (up to a maximum of US$50,000/- per project) to local communities can help them undertake activities that make a significant difference to their lives and environments with global benefits.

The SGP was launched in Bhutan in October 1998 and has reached some of the poorest regions and communities in the country. Under the umbrella of Global Environment Facility (GEF) contains the Small Grants Programme (SGP).  Small Grants Programme initiates small scale activities to develop the weaker section of the country to build capacity and generate income of the indigenous people living within the area which is locally sustainable.  Small Grants Programme activities are implemented by Community-Based Organizations, Non-Governmental Organizations and people's association or women association in a non-profit business.
