Establishment of Nursery to Raise the Income of Shali Bagar Community Forest Management Group
Background
In 2002 the 25 acres of government reserved forest at Bagar in Shali village under Shumar geog, was established as the community forest (CF). There are 48 members and they own the particular CF areas to the given period of ten years. The CF was established with the objective of sustainable management of forest to ensure supply of forest produce and services for the improvement of the socio-economic status of Shali community.
The CF is managed by the Community Forest Management Group (CFMG) themselves with the help of Dzongkhag Forestry Sector and other line agencies. The CFMG has elected a Chairperson, Secretary, Accountant and Executive members amongst themselves for smooth functioning of the group. The CFMG has the right to manage and use the resources with the specified area for a period of ten years keeping in mind the sustainability. However the group has not been able to fully afforest the degraded area with the CF and the commercial benefits from NTFPs is not exploited to its full potential.
Objectives
The primary objective of the project is:
- To help the community-based group establish a nursery and rehabilitate the degraded area;
- To sustainably use NTFPs and help them realize the importance of conserving them and
- To earn extra income by producing seedling in a commercial scale for sale and also by selling the NTFPs.
Achievements & expected results
The expected results are as follows:
- Rehabilitation of degraded area;
- Sustainable management of Non Timber Forest Products within the CF and
- Increased income of the Community Forest Management Group.
