Support to MDG-Based National Development Strategy for Bhutan

Background
The Royal Government of Bhutan (RGoB) endorsed the Millennium Declaration and Summit in September 2000.  Since then the RGOB and Development Partners (including both the UN system and SNV) have consistently worked with the government towards achievement of the MDGs. All the MDGs are high priority development areas for Bhutan as is evident from the development focus emphasized in the current Ninth Five Year Plan (July 2002-June 2007) and the upcoming 10th Plan which is under preparation.  Poverty reduction is the central theme of the 10th plan.  There is strong national political commitment and a generally positive policy environment for the achievement of the MDGs.  While Bhutan is so far on track to achieving most of the MDGs, efforts to accelerate MDG progress are required particularly at the local level.  This project is therefore targeted mainly at strengthening the capacity at the local level to deliver necessary development services to accelerate MDGs.
