[05-12-2012] The Project - "Reducing Climate Change-induced Risks and Vulnerabilities of GLOF in the Punakha, Wangdue and Chamkar Valleys" is the first on-the-ground adaptation project supported by the GEF / LDC Fund, which stemmed from the National Adaptation Programme of Action (NAPA) process. The implementation of this project has not been an easy task. It has entailed hard manual labour in very harsh conditions in high altitude areas. It has also required multifaceted coordination among different sectors and agencies at national and local levels. [17-10-2012] The roots of this International Day can be traced back to 1987 when over a hundred thousand people around the world gathered to show their solidarity for victims of extreme poverty, violence and hunger. In 1993, the UN General Assembly established this day in order to promote awareness of the need to eradicate global poverty, especially in developing countries. [12-10-2012] I would like to join the previous speaker in welcoming you all to this year's observance of the International Day for Disaster Reduction. In line with the theme for this year - "Women and Girls - the [in]Visible Forces of Resilience," the day is an occasion to pay tribute to millions of women and girls around the world who are on the frontline making their communities and societies resilient to the impacts of disasters, natural and manmade, and the negative effects of climate change. I am pleased that we are observing this important event in Tsirang Dzongkhag, with the participation of so many students and teachers.
