Poverty Eradication and Internationally Agreed Development Goals, including the MDGs

Poverty is a reality in contemporary Bhutan. The Poverty Analysis Report 2007 indicates that about 23.2 % of the country's population is poor and that poverty in Bhutan is predominantly a rural phenomenon. The Royal Government, however, has always been aware and concerned about the circumstances and conditions of rural population, which, though free from destitution and hunger, is far from comfortable. Gender Mainstreaming

The first baseline study on gender conducted in 2001 with support from UNDP and other UN agencies revealed that although Bhutan enjoyed a generally high level of gender equality in comparison to its neighboring countries, more subtle and indirect forms of gender bias did exist. The study also highlighted gender gaps in key areas such as education, national economy and political participation. Read more...

Environment and Sustainable Development

Bhutan has placed environmental conservation at the core of it's development strategy and the country is recognized as one of the few countries in the world with specific constitutional obligation to preserve the environment and maintain at least 60 per cent of its geographical area under forest cover for all times. Democratic Governance

Bhutan made its successful transition to a Democratic Constitutional Monarchy in March 2008. Its first ever written Constitution came into force in July 2008 and paved the way for the establishment of an elected Parliament. Promoting decentralization with the purpose of empowering people and ensuring a balanced, equitable and sustainable socio-economic development continue to be effectively enhanced in the 10th Five Year Plan (FYP 2008-2013) of the government.
